Think back on your most memorable road trip. מה הייתה הנסיעה המשמעותית בחייך?

I think it's really hard for me to decide abour which road trip was most memorable…

I remember that between ages 11.5 – 13.5 we moved from Israel to the US, and since a trip to the US was very rare due to its price – we wanted to use every opportunity to take a trip somewhere, most which were roads trips (since airfare for a family of five was way too expensive for us). I remember waking up extra early, excited for the trip – only to get tired of the long drives and the bickering with my sister a few hors later.

I guess those trips made me used and even enjoy long drives, because I've gone on many such road trips in the US and other destinations such as New Zealand, and even took a train trip through Russia, Siberia, Mongolia and China.

I think it's hard for me to choose one road trip as being the most memorable, because they all were in their own way. I do believe in having memorable moments and experiences rom each trip.

As a child, I remember our trip to Washington DC not because of the annual cherry blossoms festival around the Tidal Basin, but rather of one of our dinners in a Chinese restaurant where my dad unexpectedly ate a very spicy bite and started coughing uncontrollably. This became a legendary family joke, alongside my father's dream of saving money on trips by taking the family to buffet restaurants, paying only for a plate or two for the grown ups, and having us all eat of off it. Us kids refused to eat from the same plate since each of us disliked different food and we refused having those on the same plate we ate from for fear of those horrible foods "touching" our own foods. I think that made my mom happy since it allowed her not to fight my dad over his embarrassing cheapness, and we kids were glad to still get to eat junk food at the roadside Roy Rogers restaurants.

Our visit to to Orlando was memorable, especially for the visits to Disney World and the Kennedy Space Center – but I also remember the surly waiter in the motel's restaurant who seemd to dislike us but we somehow always ended up sitting serving us on a daily basis, even when we asked to be seated in a completely different section of the restaurant (but the waitress responsible for it was out for the day, making our regular guy responsible for it too).

Of course there were the amazing (and mostly free) museums of Washington DC, many beautiful sunrises in New Zealand, a beautiful view of Lake Baikal from a viewpoint in the mountains, wildlife sightings in Alaska, lovely parks (such as Central Park in NYC and Golden Gate park in SF), crossing the Golden Gate bridge on foot, and of course – the people you get to meet in these trips.

אני חושבת יהיה לי קשה לבחור איזה טיול ברכב יהיה הכי זכור עבורי…

אני זוכרת שבגילאים 11.5 – 13.5 עברנו לארה״ב מישראל, ובגלל שטיולים לארה״ב באותה תקופה היו כל כך נדירים בגלל העלות הגבוהה שלהם, ניצלנו את הזדמנות כדי לטייל כמה שיותר. לרוב היה מדובר על טיולים ברכב, כי טיסות היו יקרות מידי למשפחה של חמישה. אני זוכרת איך היינו מתעוררים מוקדם בבוקר ואני הייתי מתרגשת לקראת הטיול – עד שכמה שעות אחר כך כבר היה לי נמאס מהנסיעה הארוכה והמריבות עם אחותי.

אני חושבת שהנסיעות האלו גרמו לי להנות מנסיעות ארוכות, ןואחרי הנסיעות האלו נהניתי לצאת לטיולים ארוכים שכללו הרבה נהיגה ברחבי ארה״, ניו ז=ילנד, אופילו נסעתי לטיול ברכבת ברוסיה, סיביר, מונגוליה וסין.

קשה לי לבחור טיול אחד שהיו זכור יותר מאחרים, כי כולם היו חוויה בפני עצמם. אבל אני חושבת שבכולם היו רגעים זכורים בתור חוויות בפני עצמם.

אני זוכרת את הנסיעה שלנו כמשפחה לוושינגטון בירת ארה״ב לא בגלל פסטיבל פריחת הדובדבן השנתית סביב האגם בעיר, אלא בגלל שבביקור במסעדה סינית בעיר אבא שלי טעם משהו מאוד חריף ולא ציפה לזה, והתחיל להשתעל ולא יכול היה להפסיק. האירוע הפכך לבדיחה משפחתית ידועה במשך שנם, ממש כמו החלם של אבא שלי שכמשפחה נאכל בטיולים במסעדות מזנון, ששם הוא יוכל לשלם רק על צלחת או שתיים מבוגרים, ואז אנחנו כילדים נאכל מאותן צלחות. אנחנו הילדים סירבנו כי כל אחד מאיתנו שנא מאכלים אחרים, וסירבנו שהאוכל שמגעיל אותנו יהיה באותה צלחת של האוכל שאנחנו אוכלים כי זה יכול לגעת באוכל שלנו… אני חושבת שאמא שלי שמחה שאנחנו הילדים התנגדנו לזה כי זה חסך ממנה את המריבה עם אבא שלי על הקמצנות המוגזמת שלו, ואנחנו הילדים שמחנו שיכולנו להמשיך לאכול במסעדות ההמבורגרים של רוי רוג׳רס בטיולים.

הטיול שלנו לאורלנדו פלורידה היה זכור לטובה בגלל הביקור בדיסני וורלד ובמיוחד בגלל הביקור במרכז החלל קנדי – אבל גם בגלל המלצר גס הרוח ששירת אותנו במסעדה של המלונית שבה שהינו שנראה היה שהוא לא סובל אותנו, למרות שניסינו לשבת במקומות ואיזורים שונים במסעדה (שנראה היה שהמלצרית הקבועה שלו נעדרה מהמסעה באותו היום ולכןהמלצר הקבוע שלנו החליף אותה).

וכמובן שהיו המוזאונים החינמיים (ברובם) והמדהימים בוושינגטון הבירה, וזריחות בניו זילנד, הנוף של ימת בייקל מהגבעות סביבה, חיות בר באלסקה, פארקים יפים (כמו למשל סנטרל פארק בניו יורק או הדגולדן גייט פארק בסן פרנסיסקו), או לחצות את גשר הגולדן גייט ברגל, וכמובן האנשים שזוכים להכיר בטיול.
